2024 Spring Festival Movie Box Office Sets New Records
Preliminary statistics from the National Film Administration have revealed that the national movie box office during the 2024 Spring Festival holiday (February 10 to February 17, 2024) reached 8.016 billion yuan, with a total of 163 million moviegoers. This marks an 18.47% increase in box office and a 26.36% increase in the number of moviegoers compared to the 2023 Spring Festival holiday, setting new records for the same period.
Of the 8 films released during the Spring Festival, 4 managed to achieve a box office of over 1 billion yuan, while the other 4 films had a box office of less than 100 million yuan and were subsequently withdrawn from the holiday period. The top four films at the box office were “Hot and Furious” with 2.718 billion yuan, “Flying Life 2” with 2.398 billion yuan, “Bear Infested: Reverse Time and Space” with 1.389 billion yuan, and “Article 20” with 1.34 billion yuan.
One of the most talked-about films was “Hot and Spicy,” directed by and starring Jia Ling, who garnered attention for losing 100 pounds for the role. This film, following the success of her directorial debut “Hello, Li Huanying,” achieved a box office of 5.413 billion yuan in the 2021 Spring Festival, solidifying Jia Ling’s status as a top director.
However, some have questioned the success of “Hot and Spicy,” suggesting that it was only due to Jia Ling’s personal story rather than the quality of the film itself. Regardless of the criticism, industry experts have emphasized that the tremendous box office success of the film should not be underestimated.
