LONDON (AP) — England coach Sarina Wiegman signed a contract extension on Tuesday and will remain in charge of the national team until the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
Wiegman took over the management of the Lionesses in September 2021, leading them to European champions in 2022 and then reaching the final of last year’s World Cup, losing 1-0 to Spain. She was awarded on Monday as the best coach in women’s football in 2023 at the FIFA awards gala.
“I am very happy to receive the opportunity to lead England until 2027 after two and a half incredible years,” said the Dutch strategist. “In the future, we have pending tasks and I know that we are capable of more, although nothing will be easy.”
Before the World Cup, Wiegman will aim for England to retain its continental title. The Euro qualifiers start in April and the final phase of the tournament will be held in Switzerland in 2025.
Before taking charge of England, Wiegman led the Netherlands to the European title as hosts in 2017 and the 2019 World Cup final.
