On their ten satanic dirges to the nightside eclipse, the black flame is burning uncannily bright. The spirits of old are with Satanic North, helping to spread their grim gospel around the globe. “We hope there’s something for everybody who’s a true believer of this music”, Petri says. There is. And then some. Forget the magnetic north. All hail Satanic North.
Something is brewing in the satanic north of Finland, because Petri Lindroos, who is best known for his work with ENSIFERUM, but perhaps also from the earlier times of NORTHER and more recently WARMEN, has a new project. The whole thing is called SATANIC NORTH and is dedicated to straightforward black metal.
Next to him are ENSIFERUM colleague Abyssir, Janne Parviainen, a certain Von Occult and Skomorokh. Petri has also acquired an alter ego, calls himself IIT Caprae and surprisingly only plays the bass in this project, while the guitar and vocals are handled by the aforementioned colleagues.
What’s on offer is earthy Black Metal, primarily designed for a guitar and therefore, despite some Nordic melodies, very straight and uncompromising. Occult is convincing with a suitably rough voice and a somewhat variable voice that immediately stands out, the riffs drill into your marrow and bones and the blasts are as powerful as they come. There are actually no breaks and you won’t find anything new here, but the guys do it very decently and are often reminiscent of heroes like IMMORTAL, GORGOROTH or DARK FUNERAL. You can tell that the Finns simply wanted to live out their love for the genre here instead of creating great, creative innovations. And that works wonderfully.
With corpse paint, the synonyms and texts about Satan, war and demons as well as a logo that is difficult to read, all genre clichés are effortlessly served and should make fans of cleanly produced but old-school black metal happy.
