Surprise surprise, do you know who pollutes less? SUVs …

ROME – Surprise: the burden of CO2 emissions in Europe is not due to SUVs, as many think. On the contrary. By virtue of the introduction of electrified variants in the range, it is the Sport Utility Vehicles that keep the average emissions in the European Union down.

According to the latest edition of the JATO Dynamics report entitled “Driving the Change for Good: The EV Boom”, based on the analysis of CO2 emissions recorded in the EU in 2021, medium-sized SUVs have in fact confirmed themselves as the most environmentally friendly vehicles in Europe with average emissions of 65.4 g / km, the lowest value compared to the other 14 segments taken into consideration.

The acceleration of the market towards electrification – reads the document – was largely possible thanks to the arrival on the market of more electric SUVs and plug-in hybrids. Last year, out of 85 fully electric models available in Europe, 35 were Sport Utilities, or 41% of the offer. A big leap compared to 2019, when only 24% of zero-emission cars were SUVs. (fp)
