The Swedish rockers TAKIDA have already had a few highlights to report in their career, their albums have always landed in the charts at home and they placed well with their last two works “Sju” (2019) and “Falling From Fame” (2021). also quite good in Germany. Now the band has landed at the renowned Austrian metal label Napalm Records and is entering the ninth round called “The Agony Flame”.
Anthemic rock with a modern touch is the basic recipe here. The men approach it in a relaxed, driving, often pathetic manner, with a good dash of pop appeal, but also always intensely. We encounter pleasant riffs, successful keyboard work and a deep, likeable voice on this work. “Sacred Spell” at the latest brings to mind the great POETS OF THE FALL, but HIM also plays a role again and again due to the melancholic undertone. The Swedes invite you to sing along, indulge and dream. With occasional strings you want to literally underline the dark and sometimes sad atmosphere and TAKIDA manage to do that with a lot of sensitivity.
But the Northmen can also really rock, as the heavy, driving “In Time” or the dynamic “Sickning” show wonderfully. Nevertheless, the quiet pieces, interspersed with keys and piano, dominate and create a pathetic, anthemic and also pleasant atmosphere without slipping too much towards gothic.
Over the whole distance, one or the other might lack some dynamics or stand out moments, but “The Agony Flame” has by no means a weak song to report and shows a band that is far from reaching its zenith and still has accents after 25 years can set.
