The Controversy Behind Foreign Praise for the Netflix Version of “The Three-Body Problem”

Why Chinese People are Upset with Foreign Praise for Netflix’s “The Three-Body Problem”

Kuai Technology reported on April 5 that while Chinese audiences have mixed feelings about the Netflix adaptation of “The Three-Body Problem,” the show has garnered significant acclaim abroad.

According to reports, the show amassed 197.3 million hours of viewing time and attracted 26.6 million viewers just 11 days after its release. Furthermore, “The Three-Body Problem” remains among the top 10 in 93 countries and regions globally.

Despite criticisms from some viewers in China, the Netflix version of “The Three-Body Problem” has enjoyed immense popularity overseas.

Currently, many foreign netizens eagerly anticipate the second season’s release: “It took me two days to watch all 8 episodes, but unfortunately, the second season may have to wait three years.”

Zeng Guoxiang, one of the directors of the show, clarified: “The Netflix version of ‘The Three-Body Problem’ is an international science fiction production mainly in English for a global audience, not ‘American Chinese food’.” This implies that the show does not prioritize catering to Chinese tastes.

Several industry experts noted that compared to the Tencent version, the Netflix adaptation has a quicker pace and a more condensed storyline, covering 60% of the original content in just one season. However, this decision by Hollywood to rapidly skip over unfamiliar aspects of Chinese history and delve into a familiar “comfort zone” has led to criticisms of the show losing some of its unique charm and becoming a typical American thriller and sci-fi drama.

Despite these criticisms, the show’s success abroad highlights the global appeal of Chinese literary works.
