Caterina Rodríguez Arraiza delved into the history of reggaeton and Puerto Rican cultural manifestations as part of a special project for her Fashion Trend class at Marist College in New York. Her research focused on the origins and global impact of the urban music genre, tracing its roots to a fusion of ‘dembow’, dancehall, reggae, and hip-hop that originated in Jamaica and made its way to Puerto Rico in the 1990s.
Rodríguez Arraiza highlighted the rise of reggaeton in Puerto Rico, pointing out key artists who have shaped the movement, including Daddy Yankee, Wisin & Yandel, and Bad Bunny. She noted that reggaeton faced opposition from mainstream media and radio stations but ultimately prevailed due to the evolution of digital technologies, the empowerment of the Latin American market, and the creativity of reggaeton artists.
The young student also emphasized the resilience of Puerto Rican culture, particularly in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, and how artists like Ozuna and Bad Bunny carried messages of strength and hope through their music. Additionally, she explored the influence of Puerto Rican culture on music, dance, gastronomy, and fashion, praising the talent of Puerto Rican designers who have adapted global trends into unique pieces.
