Netflix miniseries tells the life of The Godmother of drugs, Griselda Blanco, with Sofia Vergara in the leading role
The life of Griselda Blanco, known as “The Godmother” of drugs, is being told in a Netflix miniseries, which premiered on January 25, with the lead role being played by Sofia Vergara from Barranquilla. Her story is one of the most notorious in the history of drug trafficking.
By 1984, Griselda Blanco was heading a large and violent organization in Miami, according to the United States Department of Justice. She modeled her organization after the mafia family portrayed in the movie ‘The Godfather’. Blanco’s influence in the drug world was so strong that even one of her four children was named Michael Corleone.
Blanco is one of the few female drug trafficking figures whose story has been represented in films, series, and books. She joins names like Pablo Escobar, who, according to journalist Martha Soto, admitted to entering drug trafficking to follow her example.
Born in Colombia in 1943, Blanco started her life of crime at a young age, and by the 1970s and 1980s, she had formed an empire of illegal drug trafficking from Colombia to the United States. This earned her the nickname “The Queen of Cocaine” and a spot on Celebrity Networth’s list of the 50 richest criminals in the world.
Despite her tremendous influence and fortune, Blanco encountered justice and was sentenced to prison in the United States in the 1980s. After serving her sentence, she was deported to Colombia, where she lived quietly until her death in 2012. Blanco was murdered at the age of 69 outside a butcher shop in Medellín, echoing the violence that she once orchestrated.
Griselda Blanco’s life is one of contradiction, intertwining immense power, crime, and a violent demise. The Netflix miniseries aims to bring her tumultuous story to a new audience, offering a glimpse into the life of one of history’s most notorious female drug traffickers.
