The whole play is enriched with beautiful dances with twists and turns and moving music melody. The passages, the highly classical stage design, etc., reproduce the shackled but thought-provoking “home” described by Ba Jin, the literary master.
It is reported that this round of performances will be performed by the Experimental Theater Troupe of the Central Academy of Drama, with Liu Hongmei, Li Xionghui, Chen Xiaoling, Dai Jinsong and other Chinese opera professors acting as the main creators.
The musical “Family” is adapted from the novel of the same name by the literary giant Ba Jin. It tells the decay and decline of the Sichuan feudal family “Gao Family” in the early 1920s, with three brothers Jue Xin, Jue Min, Jue Hui and Rui Jue. The different destinies of key figures such as Mei Fen, Ming Feng, etc., as clues, accused the feudal system of the destruction of life, and praised the determination of the new generation of young people to break through the barriers and the awakening of democratic consciousness.

According to reports, in line with the original creative intention of “recreating classics with classics and paying tribute to youth with youth”, in 2011, the main creative team centered on the teachers and students of the Musical Theatre Department of the Central Academy of Drama put the original musical “Home” on for the first time. The stage of the International University Drama Festival. In the following ten years, the play has been staged many times in the experimental theater of the Chinese Opera and other stages. It has been perfected in a round of performances and has become the “Classic Collection” of the Central Academy of Drama. It is worth mentioning that in 2018, the play also launched a movie version, allowing more audiences to feel the new charm of the collision between musicals and Chinese literary classics through the big screen.
This time, the musical “Home” appeared on the Beijing Tianqiao Art Center stage for the first time. The performance was based on the original version and enriched the plot structure and aria design. The stage presentation was also more adaptable and the pursuit of texture. The main actors were all by the Central Academy of Drama. The teachers and students of the Musical Theatre Department and the Performance Department presented a high-level, high-quality stage boutique.
On the night of the premiere, with a burst of lively rock music, a lively big family wedding kicked off the show. In the first performance, Jin Shengquan, a teacher and musical actor in the Department of Musical Theatre of the Chinese Opera, played the role of “Je Xin”. The singing skills and acting skills of “Jue Xin”, a tragic character in the family building, stood on the stage, and the audience was moved and could not help but sigh. When analyzing character creation, Jin Shengquan said: “When creating the character of Juexin, my voice expression is more focused on pursuing a sense of age and sense of scale. I feel that Xin is a fettered character in a feudal family, so his voice sounds It is always hesitant to speak, not very bright, even with a hint of cowardice.”
The musical “Home” refines, cuts and reshapes the characters, scenes, and plots of the original novel. In addition to the relationship between Juexin and Mei Fen and Rui Jue, it also focuses on the second young master Juemin and the cousin of Qin. The three young masters Juehui and the maid Mingfeng, Mrs. Gao and Aunt Chen, and many other groups of characters reproduce the various forms of sentient beings in feudal families in the old era, and the determination and action of the new youth to break through the cage after the “May Fourth Movement”.
Director Liu Hongmei said in an interview: “The new version of the musical “Home” staged this time is more contemporary. We have strengthened the ideals and beliefs of young people in the play, and strengthened their awareness of awakening. We hope that young audiences can feel it. To enlightenment and power, let the classics exude a new light in a way that we love to hear.”
At the end of the play, after the death of the lover and the decline of the family, the young generation who came out of the “home” walked together again, singing the melody of “Awakening”, impassioned, inspiring the audience, and pushing the play to its climax.
As a local original musical, the music and dance presentation of “Home” became the highlight of the premiere that night.
The whole play contains 28 songs such as “Feng Juemei”, “Awakening” and “Quote of Youth”. The music is accompanied by the ups and downs of the plot, sometimes soft and soothing, sometimes sad and euphemistic, sometimes impassioned, and the melody is bright, leaving a deep impression on the audience. At the same time, in line with the creative concept of inheriting and carrying forward Chinese traditional music, the play incorporates elements such as folk songs and traditional operas with Sichuan regional characteristics, such as Sichuan lyrics by the guests at the beginning of the bridal chamber, and the Beijing opera ” “Golden Monkey Offering Rui”, etc., the rich national music elements fully demonstrate the nationality and localization characteristics of the play. In addition, the whole play boldly incorporates rock music elements to express the emotional changes and character development of the characters, and to achieve the ingenious combination of tradition and modernity.

It is reported that this round of the musical “Home” is another commercial performance launched by the Experimental Theater of the Central Academy of Drama after its resumption of operations in 2019.
