The original musical “Loyalty” was based on the prototype of many underground workers in the past century, combined with their related life deeds, and performed artistic processing. It tells about the tens of thousands of people they kept in old Shanghai for secrets under the dangerous environment of white terror and war and smoke. The core secret documents of the Party Central Committee did not fall into the hands of the adversary. After the first domestic revolution, the War of Resistance against Japan, and the War of Liberation, the stories were severely tested, protected by relays, and fulfilled the glorious mission.

Since 2020, the entire musical has undergone repeated artistic explorations, from the writing of the script, the polishing of the lyrics, the study of dramatic expression, and the creation of aria. The main creative team fully excavated historical materials, successively visited the CCP Central Reading Office, the former site of the CCP Central Library, visited the family members of the prototype characters in the play, carefully polished the script, and invited Shanghai literary and art experts and art masters on-site guidance to ensure the quality of art.

The main composition of the play and music director An Dong, producer Liu Jing, director Zhang Xuanhao, screenwriter Lu Jiayun, choreographer Li Qi, multimedia director Cheng Yuhuai, vocal director Gao Yang, conductor Zhang Bo, etc., all come from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. At the same time, Zhong Hao, the national first-level director and president of the China Musical Association, the famous lyricist Gan Shijia, the national first-level stage design designer Ren Dongsheng and Dong Guiying, and the famous sound engineer Jin Shaogang are invited to join.

The play will premiere on the evening of July 9 at Jiukeshu (Shanghai) Future Art Center in Fengxian District. At that time, the Shanghai Archives Bureau (Museum) will also launch related exhibitions, and set up a small archive display with the theme of “‘No. 1 Secret’ in Archives” at the main entrance of the lobby of the Jiukeshu Art Center, which will allow the general public to visit An immersive understanding of this red history.

During the rehearsal process, in order to portray the character and spiritual essence of the characters in depth, the student actors often have a better understanding of the choices made by the revolutionary ancestors when faced with the contradictions between lofty beliefs and immediate livelihoods, family and national feelings, and personal interests. There is a spiritual dialogue that spans a century: As a working people at the bottom of society, how would rickshaw driver Xiang Xiaohui’s one-day “schedule” be arranged? How did he and his sister Xiang Xiaoling spend every hard money carefully? When classmates and comrades-in-arms Liu Jinrong and Wang Tianping, who once fought side by side, meet again, what kind of mood will the two people with different beliefs and different situations look like? Compared with other loyal guards who stick to his original intentions in the play, Wang Tianping, who keeps clamoring, “People pass by and leave their names, pass by geese”, how should the cowardice and cowardice in his character be displayed? Every question is through the repeated study of the creators and actors, combined with the musical themes in the play, and runs through the deepening process of exploration, anatomy, and exploration of loyalty and belief.
