They investigate what happened to a fire in a nursing home

With a series of expert reports and testimonies requested, Justice continues with the investigation into the circumstances surrounding a dramatic fire that occurred last Friday night in the Cofico neighborhood, in the provincial capital and that left people affected, including residents and policemen

Apparently, according to the first versions, the fire would have started in one of the rooms, where there were residents, after the accidental fall of a lit nightstand.

This device would have come into contact with quilts and thus would have started the fire that spread in that room.

The incident could have had much more serious consequences, according to official sources with access to the cause.

This is not the first time that a fire has occurred in a nursing home or residence for older adults in the province of Córdoba.

At that point, several of those dramas have ended in tragedy. The most serious case occurred in 2010 in Cerro de las Rosas, in the Capital, when six people died after a nursing home burned down.

Fire and open cause

The last case happened after 9 p.m. on Friday in the nursing home called “Residencia Cofico” and which is located on General Bustos and Lavalleja streets, in the aforementioned neighborhood of the Capital.

According to the first police information, due to circumstances to be established, one of the elderly people had accidentally dropped a nightstand on the bed and caught fire.

In the midst of nervous scenes, the police and firefighters were called. A few moments later, several patrols arrived, whose uniformed officers rescued seven people who were inside the building. These were seven residents between 75 and 94 years old, both men and women.

Later, and while several neighbors tried to collaborate, crews from the Fire Department and Duar personnel arrived and worked to control the situation.

Official sources indicated that the flames damaged at least one room. The smoke caused several people to end up affected by carbon monoxide inhalation.

At least three of the residents affected by the smoke had to be taken by ambulance to medical centers, police sources reported. The evolution of these people is unknown.

In addition to all this, at least two police officers, who had worked to evacuate the victims, were also affected by smoke inhalation, so they had to be transferred to the Police Polyclinic for assistance. They are fortunately out of danger.

Once the situation was controlled, the fire experts were informed to carry out the first investigations and observations at the scene to determine how everything happened.

The investigation into this incident was left in the hands of the fair prosecutor’s office on duty, which ordered expert reports and it is planned that testimonies will be taken from those who work at that place, among other measures.

On the other hand, it should be noted that in recent times serious fires have been reported in homes in Córdoba. Several of these dramas have ended with people dying and even injured due to gas inhalation.
