TÝR is probably known to all fans of the Viking genre and the boys from the Faroe Islands stand for rousing songs and equally intense live performances. After the first albums were released in quick succession, they are now taking a little more time, and so it took five years before the latest work “Battle Ballads” was released on the market.
A few hammer blows are followed by rapid rhythms, which are complemented by clean vocals. These continue with “Unwandered Ways” and this is where Nordic flair emerges for the first time, as the chorus, sung in several voices, is almost hymn-like. A video was released for “Dragons Never Die” that was recorded in the unique landscape of the Faroe Islands. Of course, a nautical-inspired track shouldn’t be missing, and “Row” spreads exactly that feeling. With so much concentrated power, “Torkils Døtur” is a beautiful, rustic ballad sung in the local language. This is followed by dynamic rhythms again, with “Hangman” almost having a bit of a symphonic touch. Here too there is choral support in the chorus, which intensifies the primal character.
Further very fast tracks with combative vocals are followed by the big finale with “Causa Latronum Normannorum”, which is reminiscent of the band’s older songs in places and thus represents a connection to the past. According to the title, it is a Nordic-inspired hymn that is sung very fervently – pure TÝR!
TÝR are back in a dynamic way with “Battle Ballads” and almost every song on this record is ideal for going along with, which is exactly what you would expect. However, this work is not only suitable for Viking Metal fans, but could also appeal to fans of Power Metal, as the fast playing style and the mostly very pleasant singing are easy on the ear. So listen and celebrate!
