The vice president and head of the Senate, Victoria Villarruelpresented his defense this Thursday after the increase in the senators’ allowances and assured that said sum “is perfectly legal” and that “he has no tool to stop it.”
“Today the senators from all blocks agreed to an increase in their salary which was voted by show of hands in the precinct because it had the necessary votes to do so. As President of the Senate, I am NOT a senator, I do not receive payment from the Senate and I cannot interfere in those decisions,” the vice president justified, not taking responsibility for the increase in allowances.

The vice president had already authorized a 30% increase in the salaries of national senators a month ago, but after criticism from the head of state himself, she ended up giving in and rolling back the increase. This increase reaches a proportion much greater than 30%, since by collecting 1,700,000 pesos in hand, the senators will receive more than 4 million.
