Several Chinese streaming platforms have been accused of censoring the gay plot of the popular American sitcom “Friends.”

China no longer regards homosexuality as a criminal offense more than 20 years ago, and the Psychiatry Branch of the Chinese Medical Association in mainland China announced in 2001 that it would no longer regard homosexuality as a mental illness.
However, the same-sex marriage has not yet been legalized locally, and some homosexuals, bisexuals and transgender people (LGBT) are still discriminated against to varying degrees.
According to the latest United Nations report released in 2016, less than 15% of gay, bisexual and transgender people in China would take the initiative to tell relatives and friends about their sexual orientation.
