The big festivals start again, after the interruption of 2020; in the presence of the public (albeit with restrictions). Among the first was the glorious opera festival in Glyndebourne, Sussex, an hour from London. Of course, no Covid restrictions for the classic Long Interval picnic. From opera to Bach: both live, with Isabelle Faust opening the Bologna Festival; and in video, with Mario Brunello who chooses six different spaces for the six Suites and for six conversations on Silence.
Glyndebourne (UK)
After last year’s hiatus, the famous Opera Festival begins on May 20 with picnics in the intervals, and continues until August 29. In the presence of the public, with a mask, capacity to 50%: but we leave again. The first work is “Kát’a Kabanová”, by Leoš Janáček; was staged just 100 years ago. Directed by Damiano Michieletto, who signed the recent “Salome” at La Scala; it is his debut in this Festival. Robin Ticciati conducts with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. On the 23rd Rossini’s “Il Turco in Italia” debuts.

Bologna
On the 16th at the Teatro Manzoni the violinist Isabelle Faust opens the Bologna Festival, with the complete Sonatas and Partitas by JSBach for solo violin. Three will be performed at 5 pm and three at 8 pm, two concerts with the public, in attendance. Bach’s music has been at the center of the interpretative research of the great German violinist for several years, with paths developed starting from careful philological insights: from Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, to Sonatas for violin and harpsichord, to various Violin Concerts.
Borgo Valsugana (TN)
On Nexo + the cellist Mario Brunello in I, Bach and six silences: six videos – six suites – six places and a reasoning on silence; a project with Scuola Holden. Now the first three Suites are available, in three different silences. The first is linked by Brunello to the Silence of Time. It was recorded last fall. The silence was that of Arte Sella, the valley that has become an open-air museum where the works of art are all made with the materials offered by the woods (don’t miss what they call “The Cathedral” there).
