The Sicilian Region has launched a campaign called āBasta Pensarciā to raise awareness about hepatitis C and offer free screening to the public. Around 20,000 Sicilians are unknowingly affected by the disease, with Messina alone managing over a thousand cases. The campaign involves a network of laboratories, general practitioners, pharmacies, and public health facilities to ensure widespread access to screening.
In an interview with infectious disease specialist Antonio Albanese, the medical director of the infectious diseases department at Papardo Hospital, he highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and treatment for hepatitis C. He praised the āBasta Pensarciā campaign for bringing attention to the disease and encouraging screening. The campaignās collaboration with general practitioners and analysis laboratories has been effective in reaching patients across the region.
Screening for hepatitis C is available at all analysis laboratory centers in Sicily. If a positive result is detected, further tests are conducted to confirm the infection and determine the appropriate treatment. Currently, there are two treatment options that can lead to recovery in just a few weeks, with a high success rate of 99%.
To prevent hepatitis C, it is essential to avoid contact with the blood of unknown individuals, practice safe sex, and refrain from sharing needles for drug use. Dr. Albanese advises individuals in Messina to undergo screening if they suspect they have been in contact with infected individuals. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the disease and provide necessary support and guidance to those affected.
