Berlin – The number of pharmacies fell more quickly last year than ever before. More than 500 companies closed their doors forever, according to a query from the industry service APOTHEKE ADHOC to the state pharmacist chambers.
As of December 31, 2023, there were still 17,559 pharmacies throughout Germany. The bottom line is that 508 business premises disappeared over the course of the year – directly breaking the previous negative record of 394 closures from the previous year. New openings were the exception.
In fact, the number of closures may have been even greater, as some pharmacies only formally closed on January 1st and therefore do not even appear in the statistics. And further closures have already been announced in many chamber districts – the first operational closures took place in January.
