A 52-year-old from the US state of Florida actually thought he was suffering from a migraine when he went to the local hospital. However, as the American Journal of Case Reports reports, the treating doctors discovered that his suffering had a completely different cause: tapeworms had invaded his brain.
The worms therefore came from the breakfast bacon that the man had eaten incompletely cooked every day. The man most likely consumed pork tapeworm eggs with his meals, from which larvae then hatched in his body.
Pork should be cooked through before eating
Because of possible tapeworm infestation, among other things, doctors recommend only consuming pork when it is fully cooked. In the USA, around 1,000 people get pork tapeworm infections every year.
In Germany, however, the so-called meat inspection – a health check of animal meat before it is further processed into meat and sausage products – is required by law, so that tapeworm infections hardly occur.
The 52-year-old from Florida was successfully treated with tapeworm medication, reports “Bild”.
