It is certainly one of the most abused nouns in recent months, but in this case it is worth using it: “resilience”, in the sense of the ability to adapt to negative conditions and react to them in the best possible way. A study conducted by experts from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, United States, and published on the pages of Science Translational Medicine, has just shed light on the mechanism of the so-called “cognitive resilience”, by virtue of which some patients, whose brains show signs of the typical degeneration of Alzheimer’s and other dementias, do not feel the symptoms of the disorder and remain lucid even in old age .
