Anorexia and bulimia, cases tripled among young people after the lockdown. Three months on the waiting list for the first specialist visit

They stop eating. Or they fill up with food until they burst. The reaction seems to be the opposite, but it has the same origin: facing the big and small pains that especially the youngest ones carry inside. Meanwhile, they leave everyone out, often even families who don’t know where to turn.
HEALTH AT THE POLE. With Covid, the alarm about new cases of anorexia, bulimia and “binge eating” has literally exploded: the cases in Rome have almost tripled, yet the health response is a nightmare. For a first specialist visit, in fact, the wait is endless. With unpredictable consequences: the health risks for those suffering from eating disorders are very high.
IN THE SQUARE. For this reason, today, in front of the Ministry of Health, the protest of the Lilla Movement will take shape, formed both by the parents of young people suffering from eating disorders and by recovered patients and by expert doctors: such as the psychiatrist Leonardo Mendolicchio of the Auxological Institute and scientific director of the Community “Lo Specchio Iglesias”.

THRILLING. The emergency numbers are alarming. Just compare the 15 months before the pandemic (i.e. from January 2019 to March 2020) with the 15 months following the first lockdown (therefore from May 2020 to July 2021) to be stunned: according to data from the ASL Roma 1 Observatory the requests for a first visit in the age group 12-17 years, they increased by 231.7%. In the age group between 18 and 24 years the increase was 34.7% while between 25 and 30 years there is a peak of 155%.
On the other hand, the requests for taking care of adults are lower. We arrive at a general average of 72.4% growth in requests for help. Where the peak is recorded among the very young under 17 years old. “At this precise moment – explain from the Lilla Movement – the waiting lists for a first visit in many Italian regions are over 3 months for minors and 5-6 months for adults, but the possibility of recovery is directly proportional the timeliness of treatment. We die of anorexia, bulimia and “binge eating”. A sad thing. People die not because they are incurable diseases, but because they cannot be cured immediately and well ».
