The CEO of the AOK Federal Association, Dr. Carola Reimann, as follows:

“Diet-related diseases are a significant driver of the burden of disease in Germany. According to the OECD, around one in seven deaths in Germany can be attributed in particular to an unhealthy diet. This not only causes millions of individual suffering, but also costs to society as a whole in the tens of billions.

Measures effective across the population to promote healthy and sustainable nutrition are essential to contain the burden of disease and reduce avoidable costs in social security systems. For the nutritional transition to succeed, healthy and sustainable choices must become the easier choice.

It is therefore very welcome that the Citizens’ Assembly on Nutrition has put forward clever and science-based suggestions. For example, the demands for minimum standards for healthy school meals, improved labeling and subsidies for fresh fruit and vegetables point in the right direction. The federal government is well advised to take up and further develop these recommendations in the planned nutrition strategy.”
