In 1994, with the establishment of the Modena Local Health Authority, he became Director of the newly established Clinical Engineering Service, the year in which he also obtained a Specialization diploma in Clinical Engineering from the University of Trieste. Over the years, Garagnani – with his working group – has consolidated the procedures for the safe, appropriate and efficient management of biomedical technologies and technological medical devices (both hardware and software) considering all aspects that involve the life cycle of the technologies (from acquisition to disposal) with particular emphasis on patient benefits and safety. His contribution to the digitalisation of clinical data as part of the construction of the new hospitals in Baggiovara and Sassuolo is particularly significant.
In 2016 Garagnani became Director of the Single Engineering Service of ASL and Aou. The work carried out in recent years by the service he led has highlighted the importance of technologies in health care, especially in the most delicate moments such as the 2012 earthquake and the Covid pandemic, with the aim of bringing ever more benefits to patients and citizens in terms of data security.
Garagnani was also a founding member of the Italian Association of Clinical Engineers (AIIC) established in Milan in 1993, of which he was also president until 2000 and a member of the board of directors.
The Local Health Authority of Modena and the University Hospital of Modena extend a big thank you to Garagnani for his great professionalism, skills, intuition and commitment in contributing to the evolution of an area such as that of technologies digital, which over time have become among the pillars for the proper functioning of local healthcare and healthcare for the population. His example will remain an inspiration for professionals who will continue in his work for years to come.
