The first genetically modified banana has been approved for human consumption. It happens in Australia, where the Panama Tropical Race 4 mushroom has arrived and is devastating entire plantations all over the world: a solution was therefore needed, which led scientists to modify the genome of the Cavendish variety using a gene that is almost immune to Tr4 and therefore it makes banana trees more resistant to the fungal epidemic.
