Bielefeld – The Bielefeld Clinic is setting new standards in cancer treatment and has reached a significant milestone in oncological care: The German Cancer Society (DKG) has officially certified the clinic’s Visceral Oncology Center as an esophageal cancer center after an intensive audit. Under the joint leadership of Professor Dr. Marcel Binnebösel and Professor Dr. Jan Heidemann, the center is characterized by excellent quality of results and outstanding interdisciplinary collaboration. This recognition positions the Bielefeld Mitte Clinic as one of only four centers in North Rhine-Westphalia that meets the strict certification requirements for both stomach and esophageal cancer.
This seal from the German Cancer Society guarantees patients treatment at the highest level, based on the latest scientific knowledge. Studies show that patients in certified centers benefit from significantly improved treatment outcomes and longer survival.
A multidisciplinary team of experts from a wide range of disciplines offers patients with malignant tumors of the esophagus and stomach tailored and advanced treatment. The treatment options are discussed in interdisciplinary tumor conferences in order to develop the best possible treatment strategy for each patient. “The successful certification process of this organ center proves that patients can be treated and cared for holistically and in all phases of the disease at the highest level of quality,” emphasizes Priv.-Doz. Dr. Görner as head of the Oncology Center and chief physician of the Clinic for Hematology, Oncology, Palliative Medicine and Stem Cell Therapy at the Bielefeld Mitte Clinic.
Treatment for esophageal cancer usually initially involves a combination of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, followed by high-precision, minimally invasive surgery, often with the assistance of the DaVinci Xi surgical robot. This procedure requires great experience and expertise as operations on the esophagus are among the most complex surgical procedures.
The clinic not only meets the increased minimum volumes for such operations, but also exceeds the strict quality and qualification requirements. In addition to the certification of the esophageal cancer center, the oncology center of the Bielefeld Mitte Clinic was also recognized as a higher-level care structure.
