“In the east and southeast of the country as well as in the cities, hazelnut bushes are now starting to bloom and are releasing the first pollen,” says Markus Berger, head of the Austrian Pollen Information Service. Hazel is followed by alder and yew. In warmer places, the first cypress pollen can already be flying through the air. “Allergy sufferers are particularly sensitive at the beginning of the season,” says the specialist.
Prevent “hay fever”.
The local alders are currently still in winter dormancy – but not the purple alder. It has Siberian genes and blooms weeks before the native species. The new variant is being planted more and more often in cities – to the chagrin of those affected, because its pollen is highly allergenic.
According to the doctor, the allergy, colloquially known as “hay fever”, should not be underestimated: the disease can spread from the upper respiratory tract towards the lungs and trigger asthma. Berger therefore recommends an allergological consultation with a specialist at the start of the season.
