In Madrid, Spain, thousands of people attended a demonstration in support of Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Saturday, who announced on Wednesday that he would consider resigning after news of the investigation in which his wife Begoña Gómez is accused of trafficking of illicit influences. In the meantime, Sánchez, who is 52 years old and has been prime minister since 2018, has suspended all his institutional commitments until Monday, when he will make his decision known.
According to the city authorities of Madrid, around 12,500 people they took part in the procession for Sánchez, shouting slogans such as “Spain needs you” and “Pedro, don’t abandon us”.
The investigation into Gómez was launched following a complaint from the Manos Limpias organisation, which defines itself as a trade union even though it is not really one, and is known in Spain for its closeness to movements nostalgic for Francoism and above all for its frequent denunciations against progressive politicians and public figures, almost all of them false or inconclusive. In this case the investigation concerns the relationships between Gómez and some private companies that received funds and public contracts from the government led by her husband.
