Breast cancer, mammograms recommended from age 40 in the US – Focus Tumor news

The US Preventive Task Force, which gives guidance to doctors and health officials on public health actions to take, has recommended that all women from age 40 and older have mammograms every other year until they turn 74. The suggested guideline clearly differs from what has been recommended to date, decreasing the recommended age to start undergoing radiological examination of the breasts by as much as 10 years: previously mammography was in fact requested after the age of 50. But the sharp increase in cases of breast cancer among younger women has led the specialists of the Task Force to change line: “The decision on when to do the exam remains individual – specifies Wanda Nicholson, president of the group of specialists – but with a growth in breast cancer cases in women in their 40s of around 2% per year, the new policies will also have a strong impact on reducing mortality”.
