2021 was the year of consecration for mirrorless cameras, especially full-frame ones. Just three years ago the “without mirrors” represented 30.7% of sales. Today they have risen to 61.7%, against 18.8% for SLRs. The Canon EOS R3, which has just arrived on the market, is the flagship that will also conquer the last two bastions of the pentaprism, sports and nature photography. Thanks to the speed of the burst and the autofocus, with advanced tracking functions of the subjects (including animals, cars and drivers) made possible by Artificial Intelligence. Nikon has already responded with the Z9, the spearhead of the full frame mirrorless offering.
Both emulate the shape and size of the most advanced reflex cameras, with a large but light body, tropicalized and with integrated battery grip. If we have to wait until 2022 for Canon’s novelties in the amateur and semi-professional range, Nikon has already had its say with the surprising Z fc, one of the most interesting products of the year. Inspired by the aesthetics of the Nikon FM analog, it has characteristics slightly superior to its sister Z50, but is at the same time a design object. For its compactness and technical characteristics, it is the right choice for street photography, with the advantage of a classic and familiar aesthetic. The main contender in this segment is the Fujifilm X-S10, the perfect camera for those who want to take the first step beyond smartphone photography.
The vintage inspiration remains, albeit subdued compared to other models from the manufacturer. The price of the kit is the same as the Nikon Z fc, but the advantage of the Fuji is the wide range (and the great price) of compatible lenses. Both cameras are suitable for those who also want to try their hand at video: they shoot movies in 4K and have a fully articulated display. For creators and YouTuber, the product to consider is the Sony ZV-E10, a mirrorless photo-video hybrid with an interchangeable lens that for less than a thousand euros offers the necessary for the creation of high quality videographic content.
In the prosumer range, Sony confirmed its relevance this year with the A7 IV, another camera designed to please both photographers and videomakers. The company’s aspiration is to improve the successful A7 III with elements inherited from the higher-end models, such as the Bionz XR sensor and autofocus, but above all to replicate its sales success.
