Politicians and health managers, but also citizens, should come here, where we are now. Here in front of us is the wall of thoughts of the Prevention Village at the Circus Maximus: until Sunday they would read to us – politicians, managers, citizens – the words dedicated to those who are no longer here due to breast cancer or to those lives in the treatment process. And they are very sweet or angry post-its, there are regrets and hopes: with that tumor, like that of the colon, you can plan ahead. Reading the data on the screenings avoided in Lazio is impressive: the letter goes home to everyone for an appointment, but the campaign doesn’t take off. Prevention is, however, an act of courage and patience: the courage to undergo invasive examinations, which exceed the threshold of modesty or simply the fear of a report (which is not a sentence); the patience to deal with bureaucracy, distortions and delays. And so we postpone: the clinical examination or that of a possible political solution to the first of the issues, that of the health (life) of citizens.
The days of Race for the Cure, the free screenings of Tennis and Friends, these days color the city; they animate it with the appeals of Cucinotta and Fiorello or Bonolis. And every year these events make (especially the poorest) discover that something is wrong. These collective moments save lives: Mattarella will be at the Circus Maximus on Sunday to remember him by starting the pink race. They are beautiful moments when you manage to live “together”: the husband or son who encourages his wife or mother for a mammogram postponed for too long. Together we can also force ourselves to demand prevention and care from those who cut or waste. Or even just have him read those words on the wall of the Circus Maximus.
