Processed Meats and Sausages: Can They Still Be Included in Your Diet?

Excessive consumption of processed meats and sausages can have serious consequences on the body. But is it still possible to include them in your diet? We interviewed Dr. Renata Bracale, a nutritionist biologist and teacher at the University of Molise, to get some answers.

Dr. Bracale explained that while the scientific community agrees on the risks of excessive meat consumption, it is possible to include foods such as cured meats and sausages in a balanced diet if following the guidelines and recommendations of experts.

When it comes to processed red meat, which is transformed to improve its preservation, it is classified as carcinogenic and associated with the risk of colorectal cancer. Dr. Bracale recommends consuming only one portion of 50g of preserved meats, such as sausages, per week. She advises against choosing turkey breast, as it is similar to white meat frankfurters and contains additives that may increase inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract.

In terms of pairings, it is recommended to combine sausages with a raw or cooked vegetable to balance the meal. Wholemeal or rye bread, not pre-packaged, is also recommended as a pairing option. Dr. Bracale also suggests alternatives to sausages such as eggs, fresh cheese, mature cheese, or dried legumes. Fish can also be consumed in larger doses.

It is important to note that the information provided by Dr. Bracale is designed to integrate, not replace, the relationship between a patient and their doctor. When considering changes to your diet, it is best to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the best plan for your individual needs.
