Purify and reduce weight – this is what many nutritional supplements that advertise “Detox” promise. But many simply dehydrate instead of detoxifying, warns the consumer advice center.

Detox products are intended to help purify and detoxify the body, cleanse from the inside, strengthen the immune system and reduce weight. “The advertising claims sound good and are intended to entice people to buy – but there is no accumulation of toxic substances in the body and the effectiveness of the products has not been proven,” says Constanze Rubach, nutrition expert at the Lower Saxony Consumer Center. In addition, the use of the term in connection with health claims is prohibited.

Drainage can be harmful to health

Nettle, green oats or dandelion: just a look at the ingredients reveals that many have a dehydrating effect. “The loss of fluids naturally also leads to less weight,” says Rubach. But this effect has nothing to do with real weight loss; after all, there is no fat loss.

Dehydration also runs the risk of weakening the effect of medication or causing interactions. It can also lead to increased excretion of important minerals. “It is better to trust in your own body, because the liver and kidneys do a full job and, in healthy people, ensure that no harmful substances remain in the body,” says the expert.

Maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle

If you really want to do something good for yourself, you should strive for a healthy lifestyle and take preventive measures, advises Rubach. Above all, this means eating a balanced and varied diet and keeping your intake of harmful substances low. Also, prefer to use regional and seasonal products and pay attention to organic quality wherever possible. Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating. When baking, roasting, deep-frying or toasting, do not overheat or brown food to protect it from acrylamide. Sufficient sleep and exercise in the fresh air are also important.
