This Sunday, March 3, the Puerto Rican Foundation for Rheumatic Diseases (FER) will hold a new edition of Rheumatoid Expo and the first in the west, featuring important Puerto Rican specialists addressing the management of rheumatological diseases from various areas of medicine and well-being. The event will include topics such as neuropsychology, sexuality, and comprehensive well-being through conferences suitable for patients and caregivers.
Scheduled to take place at the Aguada Convention Center from 9 AM to 3 PM, the event will feature renowned speakers including Dr. Oscar Soto Raíces, Dr. Noemi Varela, Melissa Ly Merced-Gómez, Amarilis Pérez de Jesús, Dr. Ángel E. Alemán Rivera, and others. Topics such as rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, physical medicine and rehabilitation, the impact of high levels of uric acid on organs, lupus, psoriatic arthritis, osteoarthritis, and sexuality in rheumatological diseases will be covered at the expo.
Rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is among the most prevalent rheumatological diseases in Puerto Rico, affecting around 2,500 individuals by 2021. Attendees can expect a presentation on individualized management of the condition by Dr. Amarilis Pérez de Jesús and Dr. Noemí Varela.
The psychological impact of fibromyalgia
Dr. Ángel Alemán will lead a conference on how fibromyalgia affects patients psychologically and how to cope with these challenges, with data showing it affects around 29% of the population in Puerto Rico.
Physical medicine and rehabilitation
Dr. Omar Soto, DPT, will present exercises beneficial for patients with rheumatic diseases to improve symptoms and mobility.
Impact of high levels of uric acid on different organs of the body
Dr. Braulio Quintero will discuss how high uric acid levels can affect various organs in the body, especially in conditions like gout.
Lupus: Why is it important to slow down the process of the condition?
Dr. Franchesca Cruz will provide insights into the importance of managing lupus effectively, a disease estimated to affect around 159 individuals per 100,000 inhabitants.
Psoriatic arthritis
Dr. Dennis Suárez will talk about personalized treatment guidelines for psoriatic disease and the available clinical and pharmacological treatments.
Osteoarthritis
Dr. Lee Ming Shum will discuss the causes and symptoms of osteoarthritis, the most common rheumatic disease affecting adults over 50 years.
Sexuality and rheumatological diseases
Dr. Viviana Barrón and Dr. Ricardo Gago will address the impact of rheumatological conditions on sexuality and mental health of patients.
