Draghi, we need a climate plan

“The drought and anomalous heat waves that have hit Europe in recent weeks remind us of the urgency to seriously address the climate crisis as a whole”. This said Mario Draghi in his highly anticipated speech to the Senate for the possible, renewed, confidence in the government. And he added that we need to install an ambitious but achievable set of renewable energy plants by 2030 to replace oil; and improve water management. Right but not enough.

Do we have the right to change the weather?

“Dealing with seriousness” does not convey the sense and urgency of what is happening and above all it will not be enough to stem what will happen that is no longer a bet or a forecast, we know. The heat wave that is hitting the United States and Europe is not anomalous: it is a trend that has been going on for decades. Scientists had predicted this and calculated what will happen in the next ten years. Let’s not make the mistake of not listening to them again. The climate is changing quickly and this will impact our lives more and more: crops, livestock, tourism, the value of the properties themselves will change quickly. Certain areas will become unlivable for many months of the year, certain economic activities impossible. Not in a century, soon.

We need a Plan, a plan for managing climate change. Adapt infrastructures, for example for water collection, and allocate resources to live in an inevitably different world. There was a Plan, I don’t know if it was adequate and still valid, but it was there, and it has remained in a drawer of the Ministry of the Environment since 2018. We have to start from there, President Draghi: while we are completing the long ecological transition we need a plan to manage the years to come in an increasingly warm world. Otherwise we will always speak of “emergency”, proving that we have not understood anything.
