The Case of Ephedrine-Containing Drugs: New Regulations on the Horizon
A new draft legislative decree is set to be introduced today by the Council of Ministers, aiming to introduce stricter regulations on drugs containing ephedrine. This initiative comes in response to the increasing illicit use of ephedrine in drug production, particularly in the creation of narcotics such as methamphetamine.
Ephedrine, commonly found in over-the-counter products used to combat colds and asthma, is known to have psychoactive effects on the central nervous system. In the past, it has also been used as a doping substance in sports, with the International Olympic Committee considering it a form of doping if detected in urine samples exceeding 10 micrograms per milliliter.
According to Professor Massimo Clerici, a Psychiatry expert from the Bicocca University of Milan, the use of high doses of ephedrine can lead to serious health risks. These risks include states of anxiety, confusion, restlessness, insomnia, and even psychotic states. More severe consequences such as cardiac fibrillation, heart attack, stroke, and even coma or death can occur when ephedrine-based drugs are combined with other stimulants like coffee or amphetamines.
The introduction of tighter regulations on ephedrine-containing drugs is aimed at curbing the illicit use of this substance in drug production and preventing potentially dangerous health risks associated with its consumption.
