The epidemiologist Prof. Hajo Zeeb, Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research, advocates better preparation for pandemic situations in Germany. At the same time, he considers parts of the past Corona protective measures to be justified. Amid the calls for a review of how to deal with the virus, the scientist emphasizes that protective measures such as curfews “in principle also had an effect”. At the television station phoenix he explains: “If you look at the scientific data on this, the lockdown has already achieved that the frequency of contact, which was a very central parameter, has actually been significantly reduced as a result.” Although there are things that could be done differently “especially with today’s knowledge,” he emphasizes at the same time: “We are still learning.”

Zeeb also comments on the recently published minutes of the RKI crisis team, which caused a stir. “From my point of view, it’s not a scandal,” said the epidemiologist. It is “completely self-evident” that a scientific institution like the RKI “has to think about many things” and that these “do not appear to be quite as simple as they might later be transported politically”. From Zeeb’s point of view, a lot of things are now “completely overrated or taken out of context.”

With a view to future crises, “a lot of transparency” and “a lot of communication” are needed. In addition, Zeeb is in favor of “basic financing of preparatory measures.” “We now have to stick with it so that they don’t disappear into obscurity,” appeals the epidemiologist at Phoenix.
