Fentanyl Confirmed in Heroin in Perugia
By Chiara Fabrizi
The Higher Institute of Health has confirmed that a dose of heroin bought in Perugia and delivered to the Serd street unit contained Fentanyl. The appearance of this powerful opioid on the retail market has led Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano to activate the national prevention plan against its improper use, sending alerts to all police forces and administrations.
The national alert for Fentanyl in Italy has been raised to level 3 after the identification of street heroin in Perugia. The Ministry of Health has instructed health departments to urgently inform SerDs, therapeutic communities, and social-healthcare personnel about the serious health risks associated with Fentanyl.
The heroin containing 5 percent Fentanyl was delivered to the Serd street unit by a user experiencing severe malaise from heroin consumption. After a rapid check, the substance was sent to the Forensic Medicine, Forensic Sciences, and Sports Medicine analysis laboratory at the University of Perugia for further testing. Confirmation from university experts prompted action from the ISS, the Ministry of Health, and Undersecretary Mantovano.
