When we talk about the “side effects” of some drugs, we are referring (erroneously) to the consequences that they can cause to the body in certain situations.
In fact, it would be more appropriate to talk about unwanted reactions, usually caused by inappropriate use of the drug, or in case of overdose (accidental or intentional).
These effects can also appear in case of allergy to the drug, and could manifest themselves as itching, skin rash, or difficulty breathing. Undesirable reactions can also be of an idiosyncratic type, ie when there is a genetic predisposition to intolerance of certain substances.
Let’s talk now about a very common drug
A type of drug widely used in various therapies is cortisone, a corticosteroid hormone belonging to the steroid class.
This hormone is already naturally produced by the adrenal cortex, but for several years it has also been synthesized for the treatment of many diseases.
In fact, cortisone has important anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. And, for this reason, it is usually used in cases of allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, skin problems, respiratory diseases and some types of cancer.
However, corticosteroids also have numerous side effects. In fact, as we will see shortly, few know that the abuse of this drug could cause serious dental problems.
Among the most common side effects is a possible increase in appetite, and therefore potentially, also in body weight.
In addition, increased excitability may also appear, resulting in insomnia, or general nervousness. Or, other effects could be headaches, dizziness, increased sweating, and digestive problems.
However, few people know that overuse of this drug could lead to serious dental problems
Cortisone is generally administered through intramuscular injections, or in the form of drops for local applications to the nose, eyes and ears. Or in the form of an aerosol, in case of asthma or other respiratory diseases. The most common form, however, is the administration of tablets and capsules by mouth.
But, as some scientific studies show, prolonged corticosteroid therapy, especially if taken orally, can negatively affect the health of the mouth and teeth.
Long-term treatments of these drugs can in fact cause candidiasis, or an alteration of bone metabolism.
As a result of these therapies, many patients have also found the formation of dental abscesses.
In the case of prolonged therapies with corticosteroids, therefore, regular checks of the teeth and jaw are recommended, to assess the state of oral health.
