Fifa 22: the secret is in the new HyperMotion graphics engine

The most important novelty is the new game engine, called HyperMotion, which combines two very complex technologies to make the animations more realistic and numerous and the artificial intelligence system refined.

The first is there capture of the 11v11 match, that is the recording of the movements of the players no longer in single, but directly in the context of a match: this means that the movements, clicks and touches are even more realistic, because they are captured during a game action and not during a defined scenario first.

The second technology is the machine learning, with a proprietary algorithm that processes data from 8.7 million still images from the aforementioned team match and compensates for real animations with actual video game animations to make the experience as smooth as possible.

The result of these efforts is easily measurable: over 4 thousand new animations for sliding, fighting, shooting, passing and saving, even synchronized as in a real match, with (for example) the forwards turning and looking at the ball while the defenders of the opposing team carry it towards the midfield.

Some of the more complex animations are those for air battles, maybe for fight over a ball during a corner kick or a postponement from the bottom: in these cases, the interactions between the two players are more faithful to the randomness that can be found in the game, with one player jumping on top of the other and the latter turning and holding his ear or the neck to claim the foul.

They are part of a more faithful approach to reality too animations and interactions with the ball still or far away, such as the glances between two opposing players while positioning themselves on a free kick, or even players who aim at other players during a defensive phase to attract attention.

The animations of the goalkeeper have been rewritten, and there is now a wider range of saves he can make, holding the ball on headers or rolling on himself to cover the ball he just caught.

There is also an explosive new sprint, which on PlayStation 5 is accentuated by the adaptive vibration of the DualSense controller, which allows the player to better control the player’s run as he changes direction. Finally, one new balloon physics, which is really one of the most noticeable novelties when playing, with more realistic trajectories that take into account speed, direction, air resistance and friction of the grass on the field, and smoother two-touch controls.

Fifa 22 will be available for Playstation 5 and Xbox X and S from 1 October 2021, with pre-order already active; you can also play on the old ones Ps4 and Xbox One and on computer as well, although some HyperMotion innovations, such as advanced intelligence, air battles and smooth two-touch animations will not be included.
