Sport must be for everyone: even those in prison. And the principle behind Sports for everyone’; the sporting and social intervention model carried out by the Ministry for Sport and Youth, created by the Department for Sport in collaboration with Sports and Health, the government’s operational structure for the promotion of sport and correct lifestyles. The project, now in its second edition, aims to break down all barriers to access to sporting activity and to implement the principle of the right to sport for individuals and communities. Divided into four areas of intervention, “Sport for all” – financed with 15.7 million euros – will involve 73 prisons, of which 13 for minors, and 25 reception communities for minors (the other areas of intervention are “Neighbourhoods”, ” Sports in parks’; “Inclusion”).

The protagonists of the ministerial program will be amateur sports associations and clubs and third sector sports bodies. The aim is not only to encourage prisoners to practice sports. In fact, a training activity in both the sporting and educational fields is also planned for those who work in penitentiaries, for the inmates themselves and for the operators who will follow them during the 18 months of the program. Among the sports associations that have joined is l‘Asd Avangarde sport. For ten years, the amateur club has been bringing sports such as body building, 7-a-side football, soccer, gymnastics and volleyball to the prison.Antonio Caputo” of Salerno. From next week, the training and sporting activities planned by “Sport di tutti’ will start in the Salerno penitentiary; which will involve both common and high security prisoners, as well as prisoners from the women’s section.

He has just left the Temano penitentiary “Chess4Life”, a project which, through teaching the game of chess, aims to stimulate inmates’ reflection skills and strategies that can also be applied outside of chess, in everyday life. The project lasting 18 months and presented inside the prison, makes the moves from “Sport for all – Prisons; the Sport and Health initiative with input from the Ministry of Sport and two protocols signed by the Ministry with the Department of Penitentiary Administration and the Department of Juvenile and Community Justice to finance a series of interventions in favor of prisoners, detained at the end sentence, prisoners on probation or minors taken into care by communities or social services.
