The Forum “Health, Wellbeing and Regenerated Water for Lerma” recently took place, linking social projects to the Water and Environment Sector Plan in the State of Mexico. With the State facing water challenges, citizens, civil organizations, universities, and the state government are collaborating to address the needs of the population in environmental and water-related issues.
Secretary of Water, Pedro Moctezuma Barragán, highlighted the importance of joint participation and dialogue among various agencies and citizens to ensure the sustainability of the Toluca Valley and Mexico’s water resources for future generations. The Development Plan of the State of Mexico 2023-2029 serves as the guiding axis for this collaborative effort.
For the first time, a sectoral plan is being developed to address concrete solutions to environmental and water challenges, led by the Water Secretariat along with counterparts from Environment, Health, Urban Development, Infrastructure, and Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation.
Citizen experts, farmers, and government agencies discussed water scarcity, river pollution, and aquifer overexploitation in work tables. Preservation of natural resources and water sources in the State was emphasized as a crucial need.
Secretary of Health, Macarena Montoya Olvera, stressed the importance of coordinated efforts between government levels, organizations, and civil society to propose public policies for the well-being of Mexicans. She highlighted the correlation between environmental conditions, water pollution, and public health, emphasizing the need for a healthier living environment for all citizens.
