The ranking of the winning projects of the second public notice of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan for the investment “Enhancement and strengthening of biomedical research in the NHS” has been published by the Ministry of Health. The University Hospitals of Ferrara, Modena, Parma and the Romagna Local Health Authority are involved, as well as the five Emilia-Romagna Irccs

April 18, 2024 – More than one project in ten, among the 334 who nationally received a funding from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan within the scope of biomedical research, was born in Emilia-Romagna. The Region is positioned at the top in Italy for number of approved projects, 39, and funding received: over 35 million euros.

At the end of the approval process, this is certified by publication on the website Ministry of Health from the rankings of the second public notice of the Pnrr relating to the investment “Enhancement and strengthening of biomedical research in the NHS”.

Updated heart attack prevention strategies in connection with stress, a new approach to halt the progression of pancreatic cancer using mesenchymal cells, longitudinal monitoring for early diagnosis and better management of pleural mesothelioma; and again, new biopsy techniques for the treatment of rare tumors associated with hereditary causes, new therapies and biobank networks for rare diseases and musculoskeletal tumors, the diagnosis of osteoporosis; but also new solutions to reduce the impact of prosthesis failures and improve spinal surgery techniques, and an orientation study to discover the genetic causes of kidney diseases.

These are just some of the projects with high innovative value winning results, which were presented by the local health authorities, university hospitals and scientific hospitalization and treatment institutes in Emilia-Romagna. For 15 of them to receive funding, of 13.6 millionand the Region as an Institutional recipient, who will transfer them to the Companies, while to the Scientific hospitalization and treatment institutions regional go almost 22 million (exactly 21,799,333 euros) for the remaining 24 projects.

An award that rewards the level of excellence of the regional healthcare system also on the research front and confirms Emilia-Romagna’s ability to make the most of the opportunities offered by the Pnrr, placing itself in the top positions in Italy for the number of approved projects and funding received.

The funded research areas

The projects accepted for funding by the Ministry of Health are intended to ensure the development and quality of the services provided by the health service to citizens regarding rare diseases; rare tumors; chronic non-communicable diseases with a high impact on health and social-health systems with a focus on innovation in the diagnostic and therapeutic field; chronic non-communicable diseases with a high impact on health and social care systems with topics on risk factors and prevention; etiopathogenesis and disease mechanisms; proof of concept (i.e. proof of the study concept).

The disciplines involved

As regards the category of “Rare diseases” there are 4 projects approved and they are aimed at studying new strategies in the fields of oncology (1), neurology (1), orthopedics (1) and diagnostics (1).

For the typology “Rare tumors”, there are 7 winning projects and they concern the fields of oncology (3), neurology (1), hematology and immunology (2), diagnostics (1).

As part of the “Chronic non-communicable diseases with a high impact on health and social-health systems with topics on Innovation in the diagnostic field and Innovation in the therapeutic fieldthe 20 winning projects concern the fields of cardiology-pulmonology (4), hematology and immunology (1), gastroenterology (3), geriatrics (1), nephrology and urology (1), neurology (3) , oncology (5) and orthopedics (2).

There are two winning projects in the field of “Chronic non-communicable diseases with a high impact on health and social care systems with topics on risk factors and prevention, etiopathogenesis and disease mechanismsand concern cardiology-pulmonology (1) and hematology and immunology (1).

For the typology “Proof of Concept”, i.e. proof of the study concept, the 6 winning projects are in the fields of cardiology-pulmonology (1), endocrinology (1), oncology (3) and orthopedics (1).

Recipients of the resources

The Emilia-Romagna researchers who will work on the development of the projects belong to the University Hospitals of Ferrara (6.242.098 euro), Modena (1,558,600 euros) e Parma (4.800.000 euro), to the Local Health Authority of Romagna (1,000,000 euros) and to the five IRCCS in the region: Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute of Bologna (6,630,275 euros), IRCCS Bologna University Hospital, Sant’Orsola Polyclinic (6.982.610 euro), Institute of advanced technologies and care models in oncology of Reggio Emilia (1.923.498 euro), Institute of Neurological Sciences of Bologna (3.262.950 euro), Irst di Meldola (3.000.000 euro).
