German Bundestag – Carers from abroad should close the gap in skilled workers

Berlin: (hib/PK) In order to ensure health and nursing care in the short and long term, according to the Federal Government, additional recruitment of skilled workers from third countries is urgently needed. Although the number of skilled workers recruited has tripled since 2016, the shortage of skilled workers in nursing remains acute, according to the federal government’s answer (20/10522) to a small question (20/10331) from the Union parliamentary group.

According to the information, in December 2023 around 25,000 open jobs for skilled workers in nursing and geriatric care professions were registered with the Federal Employment Agency (BA). The “Triple Win” program is currently recruiting nurses from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Tunisia, Jordan, Philippines, Indonesia and India. Trainees from Vietnam would be placed in nursing. The BA also implements projects to recruit nursing specialists with other partners in Brazil, Mexico and Colombia.
