German Bundestag – Use of the non-invasive prenatal test for trisomies

Berlin: (hib/PK) A total of 66,741 pregnant women took advantage of the non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) for trisomies as a health insurance benefit in the second quarter of 2023. This emerges from the federal government’s answer (20/10039) to a minor question (20/9677) from the Union parliamentary group.

According to the information, statutory health insurance companies will cover the costs of NIPT for trisomy 13, 18 and 21 if other examinations indicate trisomy or if a woman and her doctor are convinced that the test is necessary. The NIPT is not a routine examination, the answer states.

According to the answer, the number of abortions has tended to increase in recent years. While a total of 24,641 cancellations were registered in the first quarter of 2021, there were a total of 25,817 cancellations in the first quarter of 2022 and 27,576 cancellations in the first quarter of last year.
