Healthcare workers most at risk
Cases of infection with Coronavirus they have been declining since mid-August, but more slowly than the decline recorded in the rest of the population. According to the Extended Report of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, the strong general decrease in infections seen from 15 August onwards, among health professionals is lowering more slowly. Since the beginning of the pandemic there have been a total of 180,000. The total deaths from the virus infection contracted in the workplace were 747. More than a quarter, according to the analysis of the Italian private hospital association (Aiop), occurred among health and social assistance personnel. However, the numbers do not fully correspond to the reality of the category, as accidents at work (infections from SarS-CoV2) of those 80 thousand doctors not employed by the National Health Service do not enter the Inail accounts. That is, family doctors, pediatricians of free choice, contracted 118 doctors, medical guards and outpatient specialists with agreement that do not refer to the National Institute for Insurance against Accidents at Work but to other insurances.
“To those 180 thousand must therefore be added 15-20 thousand more cases involving doctors who do not depend on the National Health Service”, explains Filippo Anelli, president of the Federation of Medical Orders (Fnomceo), commenting on the Inail report and recalling the large number of infections, especially at the beginning of the pandemic, among general practitioners. For the president of Fnomceo, both the decline in infections at work and that between doctors and nurses in any case means that “vaccines are working great”. «They are going very well – he explains – however, the categories of professionals, not just doctors, must be monitored because if the curve starts to rise again, it would be essential to take the third dose. At the moment it does not seem essential, but it would be better to do it to have greater protection from the virus ». Meanwhile, the additional recall has already started on 20 September for the approximately 3 million immunocompromised, ie transplant, cancer or autoimmune patients. According to the latest government report, in Italy there are 4,562,910 people over eighty: of these 4,223,086 are already fully vaccinated, and therefore will be able to have the third dose, while 243,117 are those not vaccinated.
