There is no peace for the Italian vaccination campaign. The uncertainties of teachers and over 50s, the controversy over the Green pass or the now usual chatter about the effectiveness of vaccines are not enough. Now to weigh on the plans of the Commissioner for the Emergency Francesco Paolo Figliuolo are nothing more than holidays. In fact, in the month of August, the data of daily administration of anti-Covid vaccines dropped drastically, coming to halve. To the point that the moving average of inoculations carried out every 24 hours, “after having been between 530 thousand and 550 thousand for six weeks, in the last three weeks has fallen to 485 thousand, 400 thousand and 270 thousand last week”. This was highlighted in the analysis of the data on the epidemiological trend of Covid-19 in Italy by the mathematician Giovanni Sebastiani, of the Institute for the Applications of Calculation «Mauro Picone» of the National Research Council (Cnr). A decline that, however, does not seem to worry the commissioner that after the first signs of recent days, has made it known that these are data “consistent with the plan and expected in this period at the turn of August. Many first doses are being made among young people and also in the over 50 range ». Also because, as evidenced by the campaign report, the Italians completely vaccinated are now 66.4% (almost 36 million) and the doses distributed have reached 81 million.

In other words, nothing to worry about, a physiological decline. Too bad, however, that, in addition to the Italians’ unwillingness to vaccinate, preferring the holidays, the scarce availability of vials would also weigh on the “small” numbers, especially in the last few days. For example, Sebastiani underlines, “2.8 million people are waiting for the second Pfizer dose compared to 2 million doses available”. To the point that many regions have administered over 93% of the doses available to them. “So – the researcher still wonders – how do you increase the first doses?”.

In the meantime, however, Israel has administered over a million third doses and the US is preparing to start with the campaign for the “second recall” on September 20, while the yellow areas are returning to Italy. Where is it? Precisely in the rearmost regions in the administrations. It is Sebastiani who explains it. “There are 5 regions and autonomous provinces that are in crisis. Three are already at high risk of the yellow zone due to the number of hospitalizations which are Sicily (which according to yesterday’s data is already yellow), Calabria (14% occupancy of ordinary beds and 6% for intensive care) and Sardinia (10% and 9%) “. To these must be added the autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano which do not have hospitalization problems but are those that have registered the greatest spikes in contagion in the last two weeks. “And of these 5 regions and autonomous provinces – he underlines – 4 occupy the last places for vaccination coverage”.

Moreover, the greatest resistance to the vaccination campaign still belongs to the over 50 group, for which Sicily, one step away from yellow, holds the black jersey. Across the Peninsula, 1.8 million people over 60 who have not yet received a dose, equal to 10.1%. An audience that is now less numerous than that formed by the “zero dose” 50-year-olds: 1.9 million, 20.2%. “Their vaccination coverage has not yet been adequately completed – explained the founder of the Gimbe foundation Nino Cartabellotta yesterday – These are people at risk of hospitalization and, in fact, constitute an Achilles heel that does not allow us to face autumn with greater tranquility ».
