Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a genetic disease that in its most serious form was a real condemnation for the children who were affected until a few years ago. A disease for which, however, enormous progress has been made in recent years, thanks to scientific research and the commitment of researchers and patients.

Today there are drugs capable of counteracting the progress of the disease and, above all, there is gene therapy: a cure that goes to the root of the problem. That for SMA is just one of the many advanced therapies that will be available in the coming years: a new way of treating that poses challenges to the health system in terms of sustainability, organization, screening and follow-up.
