The return of American military aid to Ukraine will allow its army to regain the initiative against Russia, but preparing a counteroffensive will take much longer. An American military official told the press. Yesterday Joe Biden promulgated the new 61 billion dollar aid plan and announced the delivery, “in the next few hours”, of a first tranche of military equipment and ammunition of all types, for 1 billion dollars. But this aid comes after a few months of suspension from which Russia benefited on the battlefield. “The Ukrainians have been rationing their ammunition for a while – the source said – so the Russians have, in short, regained the initiative.” Military aid from allies “will allow the Ukrainians to regain the initiative”, but “it will not be a quick process”, he added. The reception and operational implementation of the new deliveries will take time, just “to defend their positions, so I would not foresee any large-scale offensive at first,” he added. The United States is Kiev’s main military backer, but Congress has not approved a major package for its ally in nearly a year and a half, mostly due to partisan disputes. American help is considered essential by Kiev, because the Ukrainian army, lacking men and ammunition, is in difficulty facing Russian forces who are reportedly preparing a new major offensive. The authorities expect a worsening on the front potentially as early as mid-May.
