Health for all, Sardinian nephrologists on the front line for World Kidney Day

Tomorrow is World Kidney Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about kidney health and the importance of taking care of our kidneys. In Sardinia, nephrologists are taking the lead in promoting the theme of “Kidney health for all”, emphasizing the need for equal access to care and optimal therapeutic practices to prevent chronic kidney disease.

According to Antonello Pani, director of the Nephrology and Dialysis department at Brotzu hospital, chronic kidney disease affects 850 million people worldwide and has a high mortality rate, with 3.1 million deaths reported in 2019. If left unchecked, chronic kidney disease could become the fifth leading cause of death by 2040.

To address this growing health concern, nephrologists are advocating for better health policies, increased availability of healthcare services, and improved awareness among patients and communities. They are also sharing 8 golden rules for maintaining healthy kidneys, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, controlling diabetes and hypertension, staying hydrated, avoiding smoking, and monitoring renal function regularly.

On World Kidney Day and throughout the week, specialists will be spreading the message of kidney health and urging everyone to take proactive steps to protect their kidneys. Let’s all join hands in promoting kidney health for a better and healthier future for all.
