The number of personnel units of the National Health Servicewhich in 2022 are equal to 625.282 (+1.3% compared to 2021). The composition of general practitioners and free-choice paediatricians is also changing: there is an increase in general practitioners with less than 6 years of graduation (+65.5% compared to 2021) and free-choice paediatricians with less 2 years of specialization seniority (+70% compared to 2021)

These are just some of the statistical data, relating to the year 2022, present in the latest edition of the Statistical Yearbook of the National Health Service, created by the Statistics Office of the Ministry of Health.

The publication presents statistical data on the structures of the healthcare supply network and related services, on organizational characteristics, on production factors and data on local and hospital assistance activities. Starting from the year 2020, it also includes a specific focus on beds and facilities dedicated to the care of Covid-19 patients.

The information is processed on the basis of the information flows collected on the basis of the Ministerial Decree of 5 December 2006 “Change in the data collection models of the management activities of health facilities”, which regulates the transmission of data from Regions and autonomous Provinces to the Ministry of Health.

Offer network structures

The accredited public and private hospitalization facilities have an almost stable number during the period 2016-2022 and are distributed as follows:

996 facilities dedicated to hospital care 9,085 facilities providing specialist outpatient care (+2.3% compared to 2021) 11,171 facilities providing residential or semi-residential community care 6,922 facilities providing other community care; 1,180 institutions dedicated to rehabilitation assistance. In 2022 they were registered 8,045 residential structures, 3,126 semi-residential structures6,922 other types of facilities (such as mental health centers, clinics, hydrothermal establishments).

With reference to residential and semi-residential structures, 326,355 places were registered, equal to 553 places per 100,000 inhabitants. Of these the 70% were dedicated toelders assistance11.7% for psychiatric care, 16.9% for care for mentally and physically disabled people, 1.1% for terminally ill patients and 0.3% for child and adolescent neuropsychiatry care.

In 2022 they were detected 1,180 rehabilitation facilities with 14,577 places for residential type activity and 13,301 for semi-residential type activity. Overall in Italy there are 47 places in rehabilitation facilities for every 100,000 inhabitants.

Hospitalization and treatment facilities

The National Health Service has over 203,800 beds for ordinary hospitalizationof which 20.8% in accredited private structures, 11,906 places for day hospitalalmost entirely public (89.1%) and 8,253 places for day surgery, mostly public (76.9%).

They are available nationwide 3.8 beds per 1,000 inhabitants, in particular the beds dedicated to acute care activities are 3.2 per 1,000 inhabitants. The emergency area has recently been of particular interest: 53.8% of public hospitals are equipped with an emergency department in 2022.

Overall, in 2022 just under were carried out in accredited public and private facilities 39 million hospital days and a total amount of acute hospitalizations under ordinary regime of approx 5.306.000.

The indicators show a constant trend in the average length of stay (equal to 7.7 days in public wards) and in the rate of use, both in the acute wards and in those dedicated to rehabilitation and long-term care activities, observing the same trend among public institutions and accredited private institutions.

Emergency room

They will be registered in 2022 17,208,251 hits in emergency rooms (292 visits per 1000 inhabitants) e 1,318,953 visits to pediatric emergency rooms (143 accesses per 1000 inhabitants up to 18 years old).

Focus Covid

The allocation of ordinary inpatient beds intended for patients affected by the Covid-19 virus continues to decrease.

In accredited public and private structures the percentage of covid departments stands at 10% of the total.

Inside there are 23,342 beds, which represent 11.5% of the total number of ordinary hospital beds. The monthly trend of Covid-19 beds actually used shows a decreasing trend in the first half of 2022, and then stabilizes in the second half of 2022. The maximum differential between 2021 and 2022 is in the month of April, with a gap of 13,973 beds.
