Despite the remarkable medical advances that have contributed to the improvement of heart health, Cardiovascular diseases are still the main cause of death in our country, being responsible for 44% of all deaths (Source: ISS). The good news is that today some of the risk factors of cardiometabolic diseases such as hypertension, excess abdominal fat, dyslipidemia and type 2 diabetes are that they can be controlled through dietary changes. But… not all diets are created equal. So a group of researchers from the University of Baltimore (USA) tried to find out which diet was more effective for heart health.

Heart-healthy diets: The studyIn an analysis published in the scientific journal Vascular Health and Risk Managementscholars have compared some of the most popular diets: the Mediterranean diet, the DASH diet, the ketogenic diet, vegetarian (and vegan) diets, and intermittent fasting, examining their effects on cardiometabolic risk factors. “Adopting a heart-healthy diet is a critical component of cardiovascular disease prevention, but barriers and limitations to adopting some popular diets exist and must be considered in cardiovascular risk assessment.”
